Former Prime Minister of St Vincent & the Grenadines James Mitchell dies aged 90

James Mitchell, former Prime Minister of Saint Vincent & the Grenadines, has died.
Mitchell had been ailing for several weeks and returned home last Thursday from Barbados where he had been hospitalized.
In a statement, his family stated, “grateful and humbled for the overwhelming outpouring of love, we ask that you continue to lift him up in your thoughts and prayers”.
Mitchell, an agronomist, was born in Bequia in the Grenadines on May 15, 1931.
He officially launched his political career in 1966, after winning a legislative seat as a candidate of the St Vincent Labour Party. He also handled the Ministry of Agriculture between 1967 and 1972.
He formed the New Democratic Party in 1975 and in 1984 led his Party to a 10-3 victory over the St. Vincent Labour Party. He was the nation’s second Prime Minister and served as head of Government until 2000 when he retired.
He is survived by 4 daughters, several grandchildren, other close relatives, thousands of loyal supporters and friends.
