Former NAACP head, Benjamin Jealous to run for Governor of Maryland

Thursday, June 1, 2017

Former president and CEO of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Benjamin Jealous announced that he is running for governor of Maryland.

In a statement, Jealous says he wants to build a future for Maryland “that harnesses our shared hopes and dreams.” He also says he wants to make the dreams of former Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders a reality and protect former President Barack Obama’s legacy.
Jealous backed Sanders in last year’s presidential election.

The 44-year-old Jealous was president of the Baltimore-based NAACP from 2008 to 2013.

He could be running in a crowded Democratic primary to take on Republican Governor Larry Hogan next year. Maryland is a blue state where Democrats outnumber Republicans 2-1.
