Filipe Nyusi sworn in as President of Mozambique

Filipe Nyusi, 56, was sworn in as Mozambique’s new president following his election victory last October, promising to modernize the economy and maintain peace in the rapidly growing east African state.
Mozambique sits on large coal fields and has off-shore energy reserves.
Nyusi, said he would ensure exploration and industrial activities were conducted in a “responsible and transparent manner, contributing to the expansion, transformation and modernization of the economy”.
Nyusi’s party, Frelimo is a former Marxist liberation movement. The new president is a former defense minister. The previous president, Armando Guebuza, was also a member of Frelimo and was barred by the constitution from standing for a third term.
