Emmalin Pierre has been officially appointed as the Leader of the Opposition in Grenada, succeeding Keith Mitchell.

Mitchell previously assumed the role following the 2022 general election but has now stepped down.

The New National Party (NNP) was defeated in the June 2022 election, losing to Dickon Mitchell’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) by a 9-6 margin.

Pierre received her instrument of appointment during a formal ceremony, which she later addressed on Facebook. She wrote: “My apologies to my family, close friends, and supporters. This morning, I was presented with my instrument of appointment as Leader of His Majesty’s Opposition. Since I had no prior notice, I was unable to inform or invite you to the ceremony. Thank you to Sister Kate and Sister Clarice, who were there to share this moment with me.”

Her appointment marks a significant milestone in Grenadian political history, as she becomes only the second female Leader of the Opposition in the country’s House of Representatives.

Notably, both women who have held this position have represented the St. Andrew South East constituency. The first, Winifred Strachan, served from 1991 to 1995.
