Ebola on the wane in West Africa as the number of new cases reduce

Thursday, May 7, 2015

The number of Ebola cases reported in Guinea and Sierra Leone last week dropped to 18, the lowest total this year.

According to health officials in the two countries and the World Health Organization, the situation is encouraging, however, the officials are still facing challenges in tracking exactly where the virus is spreading.

In Guinea, 5 of the country’s 9 new cases were detected only after the patients died; none had sought treatment in a hospital. In Sierra Leone, only 2 of the 9 cases were identified as contacts of previous Ebola patients.

In Liberia, the outbreak will be declared over on May 9 unless any new cases are announced.

To date, it is estimated that Ebola has killed more than 11,000 people, the vast majority in West Africa.
