DR Congo and M23 Rebels Agree to Immediate Ceasefire, Commit to Ongoing Peace Talks

In a significant development, the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) and the M23 rebel group have issued a joint statement announcing an “immediate” cessation of hostilities. This agreement comes after months of intensified conflict during which M23 forces captured several key cities in eastern DR Congo.
The announcement, made on Wednesday, marks a critical step toward peace as both parties committed to halting military operations while pursuing the conclusion of a permanent truce. The statement follows mediation efforts led by Qatar, highlighting renewed international involvement in resolving the decades-long conflict.
Despite multiple ceasefires and truces collapsing since 2021, this latest agreement has raised cautious optimism. The M23 insurgency, which reignited in 2021, has been linked by UN experts and several Western governments to Rwandan support – an allegation the Rwandan government has consistently denied.
This development underscores the urgent need for sustained diplomatic engagement and regional cooperation to achieve lasting peace.
