Djibouti Concludes Presidential Campaign Ahead of Key Vote

Djibouti has concluded a closely watched presidential campaign with a large final rally at Hassan Gouled Stadium, where tens of thousands gathered ahead of voting day.
The Red Sea nation heads to the polls tomorrow following weeks of intense political mobilization. The rally, reported by Ethiopian News Agency, drew a diverse crowd, including a notable number of young and first-time voters.
Incumbent president Ismaïl Omar Guelleh, representing the People’s Rally for Progress within the ruling coalition, expressed confidence in securing another term. He pledged to accelerate economic growth, expand employment, improve infrastructure and public services, and maintain national stability.
Opposition candidate Zakaria Ismail Farah Samatar has campaigned on a reform platform under the slogan “Another Djibouti is possible,” with outreach concentrated in regions including Tadjourah and Obock.
The vote is being monitored by 67 international observers from organizations including the African Union, Intergovernmental Authority on Development, League of Arab States, and Organization of Islamic Cooperation. The African Union mission is led by Bernard Makuza, while IGAD’s delegation is headed by Mulatu Teshome.
Strategically located along the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, Djibouti remains a key geopolitical hub in the Horn of Africa, hosting multiple foreign military bases.
With campaigning now ended, attention turns to election day in a contest attracting regional and international scrutiny.
