Dangote Partners With Honeywell to Boost Refinery Capacity

Aliko Dangote’s industrial empire is accelerating its push to reshape Africa’s energy landscape, partnering with U.S. tech giant Honeywell International Inc., to double the capacity of the Dangote Refinery to 1.4 million barrels per day (bpd) by 2028.
The collaboration will equip the Lagos-based facility – already Africa’s largest refinery and the world’s biggest single-train plant—with advanced Honeywell technologies to process a broader range of crude grades. Honeywell will supply catalysts, equipment, and engineering solutions, including its proprietary Oleflex technology to boost polypropylene output to 2.4 million metric tons annually, a key input for packaging and automotive manufacturing.
The move follows Honeywell’s prior involvement since 2017, when its UOP division delivered critical refining components such as column trays and heat exchangers. While financial terms remain undisclosed, industry insiders estimate the new contract could exceed US$250 million.
Currently running at 650,000 bpd, the refinery aims to reach 700,000 bpd by end-2025 and is expected to eventually absorb nearly all of Nigeria’s crude oil production. The expansion aligns with Dangote’s vision to eliminate fuel imports and position Nigeria as a net exporter of refined products.
