China and Nigeria Forge Closer Ties Through Electric Vehicle Investment

Sunday, May 18, 2025

China’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, has announced plans for the establishment of electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plants in Nigeria, signaling a deepening of bilateral economic cooperation.

During a recent meeting with Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, in Abuja, Ambassador Yu emphasized Nigeria’s central role in China’s Africa policy, citing its vast natural resources and strategic importance.

The discussions followed high-level talks between Presidents Bola Tinubu and Xi Jinping, which elevated Sino-Nigerian relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership. The collaboration is expected to expand into key sectors including mining, clean energy, and industrial development.

Chinese firms already active in Nigeria’s mining sector are encouraged to comply with local laws, environmental standards, and corporate social responsibility guidelines, the ambassador noted, reiterating China’s zero-tolerance stance on illegal activities.

Minister Alake welcomed Chinese investment, he also outlined Nigeria’s push for local value addition in mining, discouraging raw mineral exports in favor of domestic processing to spur industrialization and support EV production.

Ambassador Yu affirmed China’s support for Nigeria’s industrial goals, revealing that concrete plans are underway to launch EV factories and other manufacturing projects – aligning with China’s broader commitment to African industrial growth under President Xi’s vision.
