Business listing company, Mocality, shutting down operations in Kenya and Nigeria

Mocality, a small business listing directory, with a footprint in Kenya and Nigeria will be shutting down operations on February 28.
The announcement came via the company’s blog. “All of the Mocality Kenya and Mocality Nigeria operations will be closed on the 28th of February 2013,” says the post.
The shutdown will affect approximately 150,000 business owners in Kenya and substantially more in Nigeria who were listing their businesses and services for free on the platform, it also affects buyers who have relied on the site to buy discounted products and services in what was commonly referred as the “daily deals”.
Mocality allows businesses to list their contacts on its website and send 400 short messages on their business and products for free and subsequently charges a small fee for every extra message measuring 140 words.
Mocality was thrust into the spotlight early last year when it accused Google of improperly accessing its customer database. Google subsequently admitted people working for it ‘improperly’ accessed Mocality’s database.
The company has said it will refund money for all paid up services such as advertising space to the clients.
