Black women entrepreneurs leading the way in business innovation

August marks National Black Business Month in the United States, and research shows that Black women-owned businesses have been celebrating increased visibility, revenue, and development opportunities despite ongoing infrastructure challenges.

Black female entrepreneurs have made a significant impact, representing approximately 2.1 million businesses and 52.1 percent of all Black-owned enterprises, according to a 2024 Wells Fargo Study. As the fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs, Black women have been instrumental in shaping culture and fostering diversity. Their business practices focus on increasing representation, access to capital, education, and reducing the racial wealth gap.

The COVID-19 pandemic saw a notable rise in Black women-owned businesses, with average revenues increasing by 32.7 percent between 2019 and 2023, compared to an 11.2 percent growth for all women-owned businesses, according to a 2024 Wells Fargo Study. Many of these entrepreneurs used the lockdown period to pivot or expand into new ventures, allowing them to pursue more passions and secure a steady income.
