These 20 black female business leaders have all shared the same title: chief executive officer. But they’re also known as mentors, philanthropists and role models with business savvy and ambition that transcend race and gender.

Siza Mzimela

Siza Mzimela is the first female Chief Executive Officer of South African Airways (SAA), appointed in February 2010. Mzimela is the first woman to be appointed to the International Air Transport Association’s board of directors in 67 years. She was previously CEO of South African Express Airway (SAX). She is also a board member of SA Tourism and the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls.

Rosalind Brewer

Rosalind G. Brewer is the president and CEO of Sam’s Club. She is the first female and first African-American CEO of a Wal-Mart division. She also serves on the boards of Lockheed Martin and her alma mater, Spelman College.
