Belize: Prime Minister Barrow calls snap elections

Citizens of Belize will be able to vote for a new government in general elections set for November 4. Prime Minister Dean Barrow has dissolved Belize’s 31-seat National Assembly.
The general elections will be the earliest ever in Belize, coming just three years, eight months after the March 7, 2012, poll when Barrow’s United Democratic Party (UDP) won 17 seats in the National Assembly to the opposition People’s United Party’s 14.
Barrow said a victory for his United Democratic Party would keep the country on the path of economic growth.
“I am therefore certain that a re-elected United Democratic Party would deliver transformative results, including the defeat of the remaining pockets of public and private sector corruption,” Barrow said.
Nominations to run for parliament will open October 16.
