Bathu Shoes: Theo Baloyi’s journey in building an African brand

Theo Baloyi made a bold career move when he left his accounting job at a top multinational firm to pursue his passion for sneakers, a decision that has catapulted his brand, Bathu, into the ranks of Africa’s most admired brands.
Baloyi, a University of South Africa accounting graduate from Hammanskraal, Gauteng province, South Africa, traces his entrepreneurial journey back to selling perfumes door-to-door as a student. His encounter with a French businessman during a layover sparked his vision to redefine African narratives through business. This inspiration led him to establish Bathu in 2015, starting with just 100 pairs of the Mesh Edition sneakers.
Since its humble beginnings, Bathu has flourished under Baloyi’s leadership, expanding to over 35 outlets across South Africa. Despite initial challenges and rejections from factories, Bathu distinguished itself with locally produced limited-edition sneakers, including the innovative mesh sneaker.
I’ve found my purpose, which makes me really confident in what I do
Baloyi’s entrepreneurial spirit and risk-taking prowess were evident as he navigated the complexities of establishing a new business. He handled everything from setting up the supply chain to managing e-commerce and marketing. His commitment to authenticity and innovation paid off, attracting a loyal customer base and earning numerous accolades, including Young Entrepreneur of the Year and recognition from Forbes Africa.
Beyond business success, Baloyi remains deeply connected to community impact. Through initiatives like Bathu for Batho, he aims to donate one million pairs of school shoes to underprivileged children over the next decade. His dedication has also created employment opportunities for hundreds of families in South Africa, including in his hometown of Alexandra.
Reflecting on his journey, Baloyi emphasizes the importance of taking risks and pursuing one’s dreams against all odds. His story serves as a testament to the power of authenticity and determination in achieving remarkable success and making a meaningful difference in the world.
“I’ve found my purpose, which makes me really confident in what I do,” Baloyi affirms, underscoring his commitment to excellence and service as guiding principles in both business and life. His vision continues to inspire others to pursue their passions and contribute positively to their communities, embodying the belief that true success comes from seizing opportunities and giving back.
