Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley is a dedicated advocate for climate action, she is extending an invitation to US President-elect Donald Trump for an in-person meeting. Her aim is to find “common ground” and convince him that tackling climate change aligns with his own interests.

“Let us unite to protect the planet and ensure livelihoods,” she stated to reporters at the UN’s Cop29 climate summit in Azerbaijan. “As human beings, we can engage face-to-face despite our differences. Our mission is the survival of humanity, and the signs of the climate crisis become increasingly apparent almost every week.”

Mottley has made a significant impact at recent UN climate summits. Her powerful address at Cop26 in Glasgow in 2021 urged world leaders to “try harder” to prevent a grim future for her country.

Since then, she has risen as a prominent voice for developing nations most vulnerable to climate change. Additionally, she has spearheaded initiatives among both developing and some developed countries to reform the global financial system, working to secure the necessary funding to transition the world towards a low-carbon economy.
