Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley has been named the recipient of the 2025 Winnie Mandela Humanitarian Award, presented by the July One International Reggae Day organization.

The award honors individuals whose lives embody the fundamental reggae values of love, justice, and truth. Mottley is being recognized for her unwavering leadership on the global climate stage, particularly her advocacy for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), which has positioned her as a powerful voice for vulnerable nations worldwide.

“Her tireless advocacy, especially for small island developing states, stands as a powerful call to action,” the organizers said in a statement. “From the United Nations to international forums, Prime Minister Mottley has echoed the ethos of reggae in both tone and principle.”

In her acceptance message, Mottley expressed pride in receiving a Caribbean award rooted in a cultural movement that has long inspired change.

“I am honored to receive this recognition not only for myself, but for the many who work alongside me in the fight for climate justice,” she said. “This award carries deep meaning because it comes from the Caribbean – the region that has shaped my life and mission.

Reggae, like this award, represents the soul of our people and our enduring spirit.”

As International Reggae Day celebrates its legacy in 2025, the choice of Mottley as this year’s honoree underscores reggae’s ongoing role as both a soundtrack and catalyst for global social change. With leaders like Mottley championing urgent global issues, reggae continues to be more than a genre – it is a movement.
