At the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley called for the Caribbean to remain a “zone of peace,” warning against unilateral force and regional confrontation. Addressing Haiti’s compounding security crisis, she urged the immediate deployment of the UN-authorized, 5,500-strong multinational Gang Suppression Force to stabilize the country and enable political renewal.

Mottley also condemned the decades-old U.S. embargo on Cuba, arguing that recent escalations have severely exacerbated the island-nation’s humanitarian crisis. While extending solidarity to Venezuela, she reaffirmed Barbados’s steadfast support for neighboring Guyana’s pursuit of a peaceful, International Court of Justice-led resolution to their long-standing border dispute.

Finally, the Prime Minister championed reparatory justice. Citing the UN’s recognition of the transatlantic slave trade as a crime against humanity, she argued that the mindset sustaining historical inequities continues to distort the modern international financial architecture, demanding honest global engagement and systemic reform.
