Thursday, July 16, 2015

Residents in Barbados this morning reported feeling the tremors from a 5.3 magnitude earthquake that struck about off the island-nation.

People living in nearby St Vincent & the Grenadines as well as Martinique also indicated they felt the tremor. There were no reports of damage, however.

Initial information from the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Center (SRC) and the United States Geological Survey was that the earthquake occurred around 7:01am EDT at a depth of between 10 and 15 km (6 – 10 miles).

The earthquake occurred about 125 km (77 miles) northeast of Barbados’ capital, Bridgetown; 240 km (149 miles) east of Castries, St. Lucia; and 262 km (163 miles) east southeast of Fort-de-France, Martinique.

Some reported a slight rocking, with one person in the south of Barbados reporting feeling the shaking for several seconds. -(CMC)
