Nigerian business magnate Aliko Dangote, founder, president, and CEO of the Dangote Group, has been named one of the world’s most influential philanthropists in TIME magazine’s inaugural TIME100 Philanthropy list, released Tuesday.

The list honors 100 global leaders shaping the future of giving. Dangote is recognized among 23 honorees in the “Titans” category.

Dangote built a US$23.9 billion fortune through cement, agriculture, and oil refining in Nigeria. In 2014, he endowed the Aliko Dangote Foundation with US$1.25 billion to give back to Africa – where his success began – investing around US$35 million annually in programs across the continent.

“Health, education, economic empowerment, disaster relief, and food – these are the five main things that any African nation needs,” Dangote says.

His foundation is currently executing a US$100 million multi-year initiative to treat children suffering from severe malnutrition. This year, it is also relaunching a 2024 program to distribute over one million bags of rice across Nigeria.
