African Space Agency Celebrates Grand Inauguration, Marking a New Era in Continental Space Innovation

In a momentous celebration of scientific progress and pan-African collaboration, the African Space Agency (AfSA) was officially inaugurated on April 20, 2025, at its permanent headquarters in Cairo’s Space City, Egypt. This landmark event marks a historic milestone in Africa’s journey toward becoming a key player in the global space sector, capping nearly a decade of strategic planning and cooperative effort.

The foundation for this achievement was laid back in January 2016, when the African Union Assembly adopted the African Space Policy and Strategy during its Twenty-Sixth Ordinary Session. That decision set in motion a continent-wide vision to harness space science and technology for sustainable development, security, and economic growth.

The inauguration ceremony drew an elite assembly of dignitaries, including high-ranking officials from the African Union Commission, representatives from across the African Union member states, ambassadors, leaders from African space institutions, and members of the newly formed AfSA Council. The event also welcomed prominent figures from the international space community, underscoring both the regional significance and global resonance of Africa’s newest institution.
