Africa-America Institute honors late President Geingob’s legacy at Awards Gala

The Africa-America Institute (AAI) held its 40th Annual Awards Gala on Tuesday, gathering prominent African leaders and global figures to celebrate African accomplishments and the diaspora.
Hosted at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City, the event coincided with the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), further enhancing its international significance.
The gala, themed “Bridging Cultures and Igniting Futures: An Evening Honoring African and Diasporan Visionaries in Arts and Culture,” featured a Presidential Fireside Chat with Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo, Liberia’s President Joseph Boakai, and Botswana’s President Mokgweetsi Masisi.
During the event, AAI paid tribute to the late President Hage Geingob, former leader of Namibia and a notable AAI alumnus, who passed away on February 4, 2024.
Known for his advocacy of education and his pivotal role in Namibia’s independence and growth, Geingob’s legacy was honored by African leaders, including Namibia’s President Nangolo Mbumba and First Lady Monica Geingos, both AAI alumni. Their tribute highlighted Geingob’s profound influence on education and his contribution to shaping Namibia’s future.
AAI President Kofi Appenteng reflected on Geingob’s passing, stating: “President Geingob’s death was a tremendous loss for Namibia and the entire African continent. It is a privilege to celebrate his memory and lasting impact on Africa and its global diaspora, alongside many esteemed African leaders, at the 2024 AAI Gala.”
The event also included discussions on leadership, education, and development across Africa.
Since its inception in 1984, AAI’s Annual Awards Gala has become a key event in New York, honoring the contributions of Africans and the African diaspora.
