Zambia’s president says the southern African country will hold national elections in September and that he will run for his first full five-year term.
President Rupiah Banda says presidential, parliamentary and local elections will be held Sept. 28. Zambia last held elections in 2006.
Banda, the former vice president, narrowly won a 2008 presidential poll forced by the death of president Levy Mwanawasa.
Banda also announced Thursday that he has dissolved Parliament and local councils before the poll, as is normal procedure. He says the Cabinet will remain in office and that all services will be maintained.
