News Release

Ottawa, October 22, 2012 – Senator Don Meredith has issued the following statement on the Jamaican Prime Minister’s first official visit to Canada:

“As the first Jamaican appointed to the Senate of Canada, I want to personally welcome the Most Honorable Portia Simpson-Miller to Canada as she conducts her first official visit to our country.

Canada’s Jamaican community is proud of her and all she has accomplished. Prime Minister Simpson-Miller is in a unique position to set the foundation for the next 50 years of Jamaica’s bright and prosperous future.

This visit coincides with a momentous milestone for Jamaican people all over the world- our 50th anniversary of independence. It also marks a half-century of diplomatic relations with Canada. As our governments work together to further strengthen our close ties, I want Canadian businesses to know that Jamaica is open for investment and trade to create much needed jobs here in Canada and in Jamaica.

As a proud Jamaican-Canadian, I am delighted that our Prime Minister Stephen Harper has extended this timely invitation to Prime Minister Simpson-Miller to discuss trade, security, and investment and to showcase Canada’s vibrant Jamaican communities.

On behalf of Canada’s Jamaican community, I extend a warm welcome to the Most Honorable Portia Simpson-Miller and wish her a pleasant visit among friends.”
